HPE - Change from the top first at Toronto HS - new principal and gave him the right to hire and fire who he liked - some increases in power with staffing and budgets. All principals were very visible in the school community and was out in the school yard interracting with the students and staff.
Self/peer/student evaluations are so important towards creating better teachers.
Complacency must be stopped - people cannot get too comfortable in their teaching and not look to improve.
Funding is high in a few of these schools - they have the ability to attract the top teachers.
Never changing - but ever changing
What can NDC learn:
Can observe and evaluate each others lessons - give feedback to each other
Right to hire and fire - there is no consultation with domain leaders etc as to the staff that will be hired in that particular domain.
Money to be spent in the right way at times - so many laptops are out of action and it is difficult to run classes with kids not having them. Support staff and support structures etc - these seem to be minimal in terms of the needs placesd on this area.
Staff upskilling - more practical examples of how to use the programs and ICT requirements that are being promoted in the PD/reading that we are doing.
Confidentiality in the process of observing other peoples lessons - not gossip about the poor aspects of some teaching practices - must be a positive thing that is constructive.
Rapport and relationships with your students are still the key - no matter how well we can use ICT etc there needs to be relationships.
Do in house PD with peers - teach each other new skills that work for you and that other people may be able to benefit from
Being supported by the school to allow time/resources to be able to implement these new ideas.
Allow staff to teach teach and timetable this on so that this type of teaching/learning is promoted.
